Panama

The Isthmus of Panama joins South and Central America. The country borders Costa Rica to the northwest and Colombia to the southeast. For much of the world, Panama’s defining feature is the Panama Canal, which provides passage to 14,000 vessels annually, generating revenues of approximately US$500 million. Panama's geographic configuration reflects both its role as a bridge between continents and as a passageway between oceans.

Because the Panamanian Government is just beginning to promote tourism, Panama is a relatively new discovery for many travelers and for individuals looking to establish new domiciles. Panama City is a completely modernized cosmopolitan center, which functions as the banking gateway for all of South America, with over 140 international banks in the capital city. After Hong Kong, Panama has the second largest free-trade zone in the world, through which goods move from industrialized countries to consumers in the Latin American and Caribbean markets. Panama has also been the top choice in the world for ship registration, hence most of the world’s modern ships fly Panama’s flag.

In addition to modern infrastructure and industry, Panama has a rich history and fascinating cultural heritage. Indigenous peoples have inhabited the isthmus for 10,000 years. In the last five hundred years waves of immigration from France, Spain, the United States, Middle East and Asia have changed and complemented the existing cultural landscape. Today, the contributions from each of these parts of the world are reflected in the Panama’s languages, restaurants, architecture and places of worship. Fortunately, indigenous cultures continue to thrive alongside the more recently arrived immigrant communities.

Panama is known for deep sea fishing as well as snorkeling. There are hundreds of islands off of both coasts. Panama boasts tropical rainforests with some of the best bird-watching in the world and it is possible to visit exotic Indian villages and tropical islands within 45 minutes of capital. With English widely spoken as a second language and the U.S. dollar as the official currency, Panama can be a surprisingly easy country to visit-for a week or forever!

Peaceful presidential elections in 1994 and again in 1999, in addition to a constitutional amendment that prohibits the creation of an army, are clear breaks with the country’s past. The current administration is committed to promoting foreign investment and tourism.

In terms of climate, Panama has two seasons. The dry season lasts from January to mid-April and the rainy season from mid-April to December. Rainfall is heavier on the Caribbean side of the highlands, though most people live on or near the Pacific coast. Temperatures are typically hot in the lowlands (between 21°C and 32°C/70°F and 90°F) and cool in the mountains (between 10-18°C/50-64°F). These vary little throughout the year.

The cost of living is easily more manageable than in North America or Europe. Compared to other cosmopolitan areas in the world, real estate in Panama is far less expensive, as are the costs of labor and services. There are many hospitals throughout the country as well as an international airport with direct connections to more than 28 countries.
